You’re Going to Love E-biking!
Have you been thinking about finding a new hobby? Or maybe a way to spend more time outside in the summer? I live in Minnesota and am not much of a cold-weather gal! I try to find ways to spend as much time outside in the summer as possible. I’ve always enjoyed biking; however, my bicycle had been hanging on the garage wall unused for quite a while! I had heard of people starting to use e-bikes; however, I really enjoy burning extra calories when doing such activities and I wasn’t sure e-biking would be for me!
My boyfriend and I rented e-bikes to see how we might like them and I instantly fell in love with the concept. We decided to take the plunge and purchased e-bikes two summers ago. Now it has become one of my favorite summer activities! Here are five things I’ve learned about e-biking since we started this journey.
5 Things I’ve Learned About E-Biking
- 1. You can ride your way — as easy or as active as you’d like. One of the best things about e-bikes is that you get to choose how much effort you want to put in. Whether you’re up for a workout or just want to cruise, you can adjust the assistance level to match your mood. We chose the FUELL Flluid-1S, and I’m absolutely loving it so far!
- 2. Battery life matters — a lot. E-bikes are heavier than traditional bikes, which means if your battery runs out mid-ride, you’ll definitely feel it. Always check your battery level before heading out, especially for longer adventures. Trust me, pedaling one of these with a dead battery is a workout you didn’t sign up for!
- 3. A secure bike bag is a game-changer. Having a bag on the back of your e-bike is super convenient for carrying water, snacks, or a light jacket. Just be sure to choose one that fastens securely so it doesn’t shift while you ride. I’m currently using this one — it works, but it does move around unless I secure it really well. I’d recommend looking for a sturdier option with a firm base or extra straps.
- 4. Fully charge your battery — every time. It’s a good habit to fully charge both your batteries before heading out, especially if your bike comes with a dual-battery setup. You never know how far the ride will take you once you’re in the groove — and it’s better to be prepared than stuck pedaling a 60+ lb. bike!
- 5. Don’t skimp on the bike rack. If you plan to travel with your e-bike, investing in a solid, e-bike-friendly bike rack is worth every penny. We went with the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider for fat tire bikes, and it’s been fantastic — sturdy, secure, and easy to use.
I am already researching new trails for us to explore this summer and can’t wait to get the e-bikes out of storage. They are a blast and a great way to spend more time outside and with friends and family!
Here are a few photos of some of our e-bike outings. I’ll keep you posted on our e-bike excursions as we are approaching summer! And if you haven’t tried e-biking, give it a try! It may also be your new favorite summer activity!
If you own an e-bike, please share in the comments below your favorite bikes, bike bags, trails, and anything else you think others might find helpful to get started with e-biking, as well!
