Tips for How to Prioritize Self-Care
We’ve all heard that self-care should be a priority. Whether it’s going for a walk, getting enough sleep, journaling, doing a quick facial, or simply taking five minutes to breathe—there are countless ways to prioritize self-care. But let’s be honest—between work, raising kids, running errands, making meals, cleaning the house, and staying connected with family and friends, how can we actually make time for self-care?
Life is busy—and that’s often our default answer when someone asks how we’ve been. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably replied, “Just super busy!” more times than you can count. But I’ve learned over the years—especially now that my kids are in college—that making time for yourself isn’t just helpful, it’s necessary, so I’ve started listening to more podcasts and reading about ways to prioritize self-care. (Tip: Mel Robbins shares so many great ideas on this topic.) And recently, I turned to a page in my personal planner titled “Prioritize Self-Care,” and I knew I had to share some of these ideas with you!
If you’re wondering where to start, here are 5 easy and impactful self-care practices that can make a difference in your day:
1. Make Time for You
Yes, it’s tough. Especially if you’re juggling a job and small children. You may even feel guilty for carving out “me time.” But here’s the truth: when you take care of yourself, you show up better for everyone else. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Maybe it’s a solo Target run, 10 minutes of journaling, your favorite Netflix show, a quick walk, a face mask, or a dance workout (check out my Zumba workouts). Pick whatever brings you joy—even if it’s just a few quiet minutes to breathe. Schedule it into your day, just like anything else.
2. Daily Affirmations
This idea came from my Blue Sky journal (which I absolutely love). Adding daily affirmations to my morning routine has helped shift my mindset in such a positive way. Here’s a challenge for you: Look in the mirror and speak three positive affirmations to yourself. They can be whatever you need to hear that day!
Here are some examples to get you started:
- I am capable and strong.
- I bring value to my family, my work, and my community.
- I am doing my best, and that is enough.
Try this for a week—you might be surprised how it changes your outlook.
3. Move Your Body
While exercise can also fall within the “Make Time for You” bucket, it also deserves it’s own callout. Moving your body not only helps your physical health but also boosts your mood and reduces stress. I’ve always prioritized fitness and it truly makes a difference in how I feel day-to-day.
I’ve mentioned in some of my other posts that I follow the Love Sweat Fitness app and within this app are free 10 minute daily workouts if you’re short on time. Or check out the quick Zumba workouts I’ve created. They’re fun, energizing, and perfect for days when you just need a quick pick-me-up. And simply going for a walk, even for a short while, is also a great way to just get moving!
4. Journal
Journaling doesn’t need to be a long, elaborate process. Even a few quick notes each day can help you clear your mind, reduce stress, and keep things in perspective. It’s a great tool for gratitude, goal-setting, and emotional clarity. I often use journaling to organize my week or work through thoughts that are weighing on me.
Not sure where to start? Try journaling around these questions:
- What made me smile today?
- How do I feel right now?
- What am I worried about that’s out of my control?
- What’s one thing I can do tomorrow that will bring me joy?
5. Connect with Someone You Love
Have you found that even a quick conversation with someone that truly gets you is all you need to lift your spirit? Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while or send a text to a family member just to say hello. These small gestures go a long way. Often, when we connect with people we love, everything else—work stress, to-do lists—fades into the background.
Final Thoughts
Self-care doesn’t need to be expensive, complicated, or time-consuming. The key is making it intentional. Start small, be consistent, and give yourself permission to prioritize your well-being. You deserve it!
